How was Allen's stand important?
From an individual stand Allen's beliefs and stands helped him to become one of the best basketball players to ever play. He mindset took him from the ghetto of Hampton, Virginia to the lavish life style that he lives now. His family no longer has to worry, thanks to standing up for the things he believed in. On a bigger stage, Iverson made the way for many other athletes (basketball or not) to feel comfortable with saying they disagree with what the media or someone of higher power says about them. He is admired by people his age, younger, and older.

Why did he take a stand?
AI took this stand because everything that he was judged on were things that he grew up doing/around. He had faith that the things he was doing would lead to him being successful, both on and off the court. While he put up amazing numbers on the basketball, (even though he was being targeted by sports commentators and magazines) Allen managed to get endorsed by Reebok and many other companies. He had an understanding mindset to know that not everyone would like or agree with his choses, so he didn't plan to change himself to for approval.

Allen finished his career being known as one of the toughest players to ever play in the NBA. Although this was mainly determined by his on the court action, his actions off the court sealed the deal. He is now know for his great style, and swagger that was so original and unorthodox, to the NBA's players & viewers, that is scared them. And due to the fear he brought commentaries, and reporters, other players, NBA gm's, and coaches, they tried to him. Through all the adversity, disrespect, and judgment, Allen stayed down the road that he best believed would retire him as one of the best basketball players to ever play. And it did.
